Day 1: We left home at 2:30 a.m. one morning in early August, and by 5:00 p.m. that day we were in Buffalo, WY. (We only stopped a couple times on the way out.) After getting fuel and ice, we headed into the Big Horn Mountains to find a place to camp. We had intended to camp in a National Forest campground, and there were several in the area that we would be visiting. Since we had several "bumps" in our plans shortly before our trip, none of us were totally sure it would work to take this family vacation, so we hadn't reserved any campsites. We drove through 3 campgrounds and there were no openings, but because it's a national forest, dispersed camping is allowed.
