James 4:13–15
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”- yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” (ESV)
These past couple of weeks have been ones of learning, or relearning that sometimes our plans don't line up with God's plans. Being a farming family, we have come to accept the fact that days often don't go as we plan, various types of things come up and change the plans for the day, or at least timeliness of accomplishing the tasks. The small changes in daily life, we accept and alter plans as needed. I would say that we have developed a good sense of flexibility in our personal lives.
The change we faced last week was different, it affected the whole family.... and our plans for vacation. We were planing our family vacation and had made all the arrangements for a four day trip: chore help was lined up, I had scheduled time off work, we knew the general area we wanted to go, and were in the midst of preparations. We've done these four day spring vacations the past three years, and thoroughly enjoy them. It's our chance to have a short break and some good family time before the busy season starts here on the farm.
Naturally, everyone was looking forward to our trip, Yet for some reason, (which we may never know), God allowed a emergency in our lives that resulted in a change of plans. Those four days, and the rest of the week, were spent in a vastly different way than we had planned. At one point during those challenging days a couple of us kids discussed the passage from James 4 (above). We noted that God must have a reason for us not to be on a trip that week. We are disappointed not to be able to go, but trust that God has a reason for this timing

Hopefully, (if the Lord wills), we can re-schedule and be able to take a family trip at some point this year.
However, we were in Duluth that week and most of us got to visit Lake Superior, one of our other favorite places. It was the perfect kind of day to be by the lake, sunny and not too breezy. Many rocks were either skipped or thrown in- You can't be on the north shoreline of that lake and not raise the water level a bit! Some agate hunting happened as well. Here are couple pictures from the afternoon.
